An etymological dictionary of the French language eBook Auguste Brachet

I have a shelf full of dictionary and this belongs in it, though I haven't put it to the test yet. I figure this is like buying a government bond: there's only one supplier, so you either buy it and forget about it or take your chances on your own. I think I researched this dictionary and there's only one like it. I'll test it right now, at random. There's a whole lot of French words derived from Latin terms starting with "circum-" and all thesehave changed it to "circon". "Cinconscrire" is what "circumscribere" ended up as. That's why I bought it: to see how French mangles Latin on the way to creating modern English via the Norman Conquest.

An etymological dictionary of the French language eBook Auguste Brachet Reviews

If you're curious about French etymology & want a dictionary that is French & English based, this is the dictionary to choose. Frequently the entries often show Old French as well as a direct Latin association. I recommend this over the one by Edward Pick, "An Etymological Dictionary of the French Language" as it often shows relations to Greek or other Romance languages, such as Italian, Spanish, but generally lacks direct etymology characteristic of Brachet's.
