What is the connection between an old photograph, a planet with three moons, four friends travelling back home from Cornwall, and the number eleven?

And what ties together a battle on the lunar surface two thousand years from now, a Russian time traveler, and Napoleon?

Photographs is a collection of short stories, a journey through space and time by which the reader has the opportunity to remember that real life and fiction are truly
not that far apart.

Title: Photographs

Author: Peter Lean

Genre: Sci-fi

Review:

If you're a huge sci-fi geek (like I am), then Photographs is a definite win for you! This novel, written by Peter Lean, has a very strong "science fiction" taste/atmosphere in it. This novel will make you stretch your mind, make your brain wrap around alien concepts and even maybe make you say "Aha! I've never thought about _____ like that!" This novel is divided into short stories (20-30 pages each) that are all linked together.

What is reality? How do we know the world we live in actually exist? Can we be sure that we are not just part of a dream? Sure, there's the whole "I think therefore I am" thing, but how do you know for sure that you are thinking? Or maybe we're all dead and living in a world where people go after death? And what about fate? Are the choices you make really your choices? Or has some higher power already decided for you to make such choices? And if time travel is possible, how do you know you're living the past? Or are you the future of your past self? What if you're reliving the same moment over and over again but are not aware of it?

Photographs touches base on all of these mind boggling topics. From time travel to life after death to a parallel world, these short stories will make you question what is reality or fiction. I found it interesting as to how Peter Lean addresses some of the most common questions that pop up about time travel: How can the grandfather paradox make any sense? For those of you know familiar with the grandfather paradox, here it is in a nutshell: If you time travel back to meet your grandfather and killed him, then your father couldn't have been born and therefore you couldn't have ever existed to travel back in time to kill him.

Peter Lean answers this question by creating a parellel world. The Traveler lives in a future, parellel world to present day Earth. In his world, the world has suffered 4 world wars and the human race is all but extinct. However, a small group of dedicated scientists have assembled a time machine called Null Point. The job of the Traveler is to go back in time and change the course of history so that there would only be 2 world wars instead of 4 (meaning, altering the course of history into the one that we are living off of today.)

The story opens up with a young clerk getting a surprise visit from the Traveler. The Traveler doesn't spend much time with this bright young man, but the clerk believes the Traveler when he says he comes from a future. Before the Traveler leaves, he gives the clerk a note in hopes of endowing the human race with more advanced science and avoiding the destruction his world witnessed. The young clerk's name was Albert and the piece of paper the Traveler gave him had the equation written on it: E=mc^2.

I personally thought that was quite a clever story (I didn't piece together the clerk was Albert Einstein until I read to that E=mc^2 part.) There are many "Aha!" moments of the book, when all these loose ends of the short stories tie up together. For example, in one story it talks about a woman living on an Earth with three moons. She remembers her husband but can't seem to find him. In another story, it talks about a man whose wife died and the wife was the woman living on the other Earth (meaning she was living an "afterlife".)

This was a quick but very enjoyable read. There may be a part or two where you have to stop, scratch your head and think about the words on the page, and then continue on reading. And I quote from the cover of the book, Photographs is "A journey through space, time and more." It certainly lives up to that quote. A must read for fans of: Flatland, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and basically anyone who likes to read scifi.

Photographs A Journey Through Space Time and More eBook Peter Lean Reviews

These are very amazing short stories, at least in my opinion.
This book kept my interest every page.
The reader gets into the psyche of the characters and empathizes with them.
The stories reflect much of what many of us fear will be our future.
The prose and the dialogue takes us from page to page
I highly recommend this book.
A set of stories that you read with great interest. Some of them are too short and you wish you would know what would happen next. The author has got huge imagination. When reading few of the stories you get to a completely different world. A pleasant book to enjoy while travelling and not only.
As usual with short stories the quality varies none are bad and some are excellent. The author states that these are independent stories however some of the characters appear in more than one. In places it did feel like a continuation of a story and in others completely independent. The author leaves it to the reader to decide what the link is so I will not give it away although to me it seemed quite obvious.
Worth a read and quite thought provoking in parts.
This is a strange book in a very good way. I feel like I should give this book three separate reviews. The book is broken down into three parts. The first part is short stories that remind me of episodes of the Twilight zone with a nice zinger punch line at the end of the story to make you go a-ha. I loved part one the most.

Part 2 is entitled Reality which makes me think that the short stories of this section might be true, if they are its both strange and sad. One story is about an invisible presence that resides with the author. Another story is about of friend who goes missing and despite extreme efforts was never found.

Part 3 was back to fiction but instead of the punch lines and zingers of a twilight zone-esque it reminds me much of personal and or melancholy poetry. Its not poetry but its like a writing exercise to have some internal reflection. It was sad, special and wonderful.

Some people who pick this book up might be annoyed but knowing what it is before you pick it up might prepare you for the specialness that this book is.
This novella is a compilation of short stories... or is it? The answer to this question lies in the hands of the reader as they progress through the stories that cover topics as diverse as dreams, choices, existence and time travel. This book covers all these topics and more, and the Author skilfully tackles any questions that they cause by challenging the reader to stretch their mind and look at them from an angle they may not have considered before.

As with all short stories that only cover 20-30 pages, there isn't enough time in any of them to develop any of the characters to a great degree but this isn't an issue in these stories, as the Author manages to breathe so much life in the few pages allocated to each that the reader is drawn to the characters and, in some cases is even made to feel something for them, in the short time they share with them. This shows great writing skill and an ability to engage the reader on the part of the Author.

I know it is clichéd to say that to write a review on this book would be hard without giving away spoilers or including excerpts, but that is truly the case here; this collection of cleverly interlaced stories will have the reader questioning their perception of what is reality and what is fiction. The Author deftly ties everything together in a way that makes the reader think. This is definitely a unique book filled with unique stories, despite the confusion that the settings can sometimes cause as the reader is taken from one unfamiliar place to another.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good sci-fi, time travel, and parallel universe read that is not too bogged down with minutiae.
